Sam – The Captain
I’ve always loved tinkering with bicycles since my BMX days. I worked for legends Dundee and Mo at Broome Cycles for a season, but seriously fell in love with bicycle mechanics as an early childhood teacher. My teaching programme became more and more integrated with bicycles and bicycle mechanics, which spectacularly spilled into my home life, as well. I was working on any bicycle I could get my hands on, wrenching for Bicycles for Humanity, and working on track-pick bikes. When Captain Millie was born, I left teaching to co-parent and found myself working in a bicycle workshop again at my favourite bike shop (here!). My obsession bore fruit and I eventually purchased the shop from Drew. There’s always something to learn – bicycles are an incredible system!
Nick – Mancunian Mechanic
My love of bicycles came from, like Sam, riding BMX in my teens. Subsequently learning to fix them wherever we were riding that day. I landed myself in my first bike shop at 19, which funded my European travels, which led me to working in a shop in my hometown of Manchester, completing a mechanics course along the way. Returning to Australia, where Sam had just taken over as Captain from Drew, I jumped on board and we’ve been spinning spanners ever since.
Note from the Captain: Our human resources manager suggests it’s not technically legal to advertise how good looking a member of their staff is, so I won’t mention it.
Hannah – on the Spannahs
Hannah is our larger than life new mechanic, having been on the spanners as a volunteer and coordinator for Bike Budz for years, she’s familiar with the unique cycling culture and bicycles of Fremantle. A long-time friend of the shop, we’re thrilled to have her on board.
She’s an expert with systems and order, so she’ll be whipping us into shape in no time! Expect to see Hannah on our Social Media platforms, moving forward, as well as other project we have cooking in the pipeline.
Welcome aboard, Hannah!
Millie – First Mate
Millie, the girl with a thousand nicknames, is highly adept at walking around the workshop repairing anything she can get her hands on, as comfortable wielding a spanner as a Spartan is at wielding a sword.
Millie is learning how to ride a balance bike, and enjoys time on the gravel, however, her true love resides in slinging spanners, and gazing at the moon – discussing the earth’s orbit over a warm glass of milk.
As time goes on, you’ll see Millie in the workshop more and more as she learns her family’s trade.
Rod Rod Rod!
Roddy is a legend at Captain Walker’s, cycling 60klms round trip a couple of times a week to hang out with us in the shop, offering sagely advice, surly commentary, and questionable theories on life and love.
We consider Rod a close friend and the shop wouldn’t be the same without his regular visits – we look forward to his arrival in the shop on our “Roddy Days”.
Rod is also famous for being able to carry a pizza under his wing, while riding his Bombtrack Hook EXT home on Fridays.
Drew Walker – No Introduction Necessary
Drew founded Captain Walker’s Bicycles and remains a regular face around the shop either purchasing parts for his thousands of bicycles he’s fixing up, or a catch-up.
Drew is keeping busy with multiple projects, and is working on an amazing truck to travel around Australia.
